What is food rescue?
Food rescue, also called food recovery, is the practice of collecting fresh, edible food that would otherwise have gone to waste, and getting it to people who need it.
Why it matters
Food insecurity means you lack reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food. At the same time, a great deal of good food is thrown away.
- Millions of pounds of excess food end up in landfills.
- In 2021, 91 million tons of food went unsold or uneaten in the U.S.
- Instead of feeding people, wasted food also wastes the water, labor and energy used to produce, process, transport, prepare, store and dispose of it.
- In 2021, the EPA estimated food waste at 549 pounds per person sent for disposal, and has set a goal of reducing it to 164 pounds per person by 2030.
Come, or lend a hand
If you or your family need food, come by on Sunday between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. If you would like to volunteer or help, call the church office and we will tell you how.
